

Yann Canneva
Partner, Trademark AgentYann Canneva focuses on implementing strategies for acquiring, protecting and defending intellectual property rights. He uses his cutting-edge expertise to meet clients’ needs by proposing bold solutions and comprehensive support.
He handles a wide variety of intellectual property matters, including registering and managing trademark, industrial design and copyright portfolios. In litigation, Yann defends clients’ rights before the Trademarks Opposition Board, the Federal Court of Canada and the Québec Superior Court.
In business law, Yann advises clients on all aspects of intellectual property in various business and asset sale transactions. He also assists clients in negotiating and drafting licences, intellectual property acquisition contracts, service contracts, distribution agreements and other commercial agreements.
Yann is a member of the International Trademark Association and sits on various committees where he remains at the centre of talks about current international issues.
Trademark portfolio management
- Manages Canadian and international trademark portfolios comprising hundreds of applications and registrations for many local and international corporations, ranging from small and medium enterprises to multinationals operating in various fields including security, technology and software, alcoholic beverages, agri-food, construction materials, cosmetics, real estate, and official marks for cities, professional orders and other public authorities.
- Advises and drafts opinions on trademark availability, validity and protection.
Commercial law – Trademarks and copyright
- Advised and represented a buyer regarding the establishment of transitional trademark licence agreements in the context of a business acquisition.
- Advised and represented a Montréal university health centre in implementing an internal policy on copyright administration and drafting licence agreements and copyright assignments.
Litigation – Intellectual property
- Defended the Canadian subsidiary of a global real estate brokerage before the Superior Court in a dispute alleging the infringement of a competitor’s trademarks.
- Represented a Québec-based commercial radio station in an action to oppose a trademark application likely to cause confusion.
Mergers and Acquisitions
- Advised and drafted contracts in connection with the sale of Québec assets of Medican Organic Inc., a subsidiary of The Green Organic Dutchman Holdings Ltd., a leader in the production of organic cannabis. The transaction included farmland, greenhouses and other buildings as well as specialized equipment for cannabis cultivation.
