Samuel Lavoie focuses his practice on all aspects of civil and commercial litigation, including business law and class actions. He regularly intervenes at all stages of litigation, from providing strategic advice to representing clients before the courts.

Samuel advises and represents Canadian and international clients, including financial institutions, pharmaceutical companies and consumer goods manufacturers in complex commercial litigation, class actions, shareholder disputes, as well as matters involving civil liability and administrative and regulatory law. He also acts in matters involving extraordinary remedies, including injunctions, seizures before judgment and Anton Piller, Mareva and Norwich orders.

The breadth of his practice enables him to assist corporations and organizations operating in a wide range of sectors and circumstances and to defend their interests before all levels of court in Québec, including the Superior Court of Québec and the Court of Appeal, as well as in complex commercial arbitrations.

Before joining our team, Samuel practised at a national law firm and at a well-known boutique firm in Montréal.

Samuel practises in French and English.

In particular, Samuel has:

  • defended corporations in class actions involving consumer protection, product liability and competition law;
  • defended the interests of major international pharmaceutical companies in class actions relating to alleged adverse effects caused by some of their products;
  • defended a leading online education solutions provider in connection with a CA$12 million oppression claim before the Superior Court of Québec;
  • represented plaintiffs in an oppression claim before the Superior Court of Québec seeking, at the preliminary stage, a safeguard order and permanent relief to remedy the defendants’ alleged oppressive conduct;
  • been part of the team that successfully defended a Québec state-owned corporation in a class action involving alleged violations of the Consumer Protection Act;
  • been part of the team representing the defendant in a multi-million-dollar real estate dispute concerning the interpretation of an agreement that had bound the parties for several decades;
  • advised a pharmaceutical company on the coming into force and interpretation of provincial statutes and regulations.
