Katherine Loranger
PartnerKatherine Loranger is a partner in the firm’s Litigation group. She has wide-ranging expertise in civil and commercial litigation, particularly in the areas of insurance law, construction litigation, professional liability and product liability.
Katherine also has significant experience in matters involving fraud, representing clients before all levels of the courts and advising them on the detection, investigation, prevention and recovery of proceeds of fraud. Her services are also called upon in files involving extraordinary remedies such as injunctions and seizures before judgment.
Before joining the firm, Katherine practised civil and commercial litigation at a national law firm for several years and worked in the legal department of a major Canadian insurance company.
Insurance law
- Represents and advises insurance companies on the scope and interpretation of insurance policies in the areas of property insurance and commercial, professional and directors’ and officers’ liability insurance.
- Is frequently called upon by her clients in connection with investigations and litigation arising from fraudulent claims.
Professional liability
- Represents and advises various professional liability insurance funds and defends their members in pending litigations.
Construction law
- Represents general contractors and professionals in construction and real estate litigation.
Insurance law – Directors’ and officers’ liability
- Successfully represented an insurance company and its insureds (the Syndicate and its directors) before the Superior Court of Québec and the Québec Court of Appeal in an action for damages alleging directors’ and officers’ liability.
Wrongful conviction – Crown liability – Civil action
- Acted for a victim of a miscarriage of justice in his civil lawsuit against the Federal and Provincial governments.
Civil liability – Vicarious liability
- Represented various entities in civil cases involving allegations of sexual assault committed by employees and/or officers.
Insurance law – Product liability
- Successfully defended a manufacturer and its insurer following the sale and collapse of a greenhouse with a galvanized steel structure.
