In Memory of the Honourable Louis LeBel

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of our colleague and friend, the Honourable Louis LeBel, on June 8, 2023. 

Justice LeBel devoted his life to Québec and Canadian law. We honour his outstanding career, which spanned more than 60 years of practice, 30 of which were spent on the bench.

Renowned for his broad culture, encyclopedic knowledge of the law and mastery of Canada’s two legal systems, Justice LeBel was nevertheless a humble man. Today, he is widely regarded as one of the most brilliant judges in Canadian history.

“Justice LeBel’s influence on Canadian law is so vast that it is difficult to summarize. He is widely regarded as one of the most prolific judges in Canadian history. He rendered countless landmark decisions in a wide variety of fields that influenced the very legal fabric of Canadian society. It was a true honour to work with him and to have had the opportunity to benefit from his experience and wisdom. On behalf of the entire Langlois family, I extend my deepest condolences to all his loved ones,” shared Jean-François Gagnon, Chief Executive Officer of Langlois Lawyers.

His many contributions to the law have defined the history of law in Canada and will continue to influence generations to come.
