Langlois Welcomes Seven Talented New Lawyers to Its Labour and Employment Law Team

Montréal, October 23, 2018 – Langlois is pleased to announce that its clients can now rely on the expertise of seven talented new lawyers specialized in labour and employment law, two of whom are partners.

Partners (in alphabetical order) 

Catherine Biron has practiced in the area of labour relations for more than ten years, and is recognized for her practical approach and ability to handle complex and sensitive matters. She represents and assists provincially or federally incorporated companies, both SMEs and large businesses. She is involved in the negotiation of collective agreements as well as in mediations, and represents businesses before courts and tribunals regarding the management of employees and in a broad range of labour relations and employment law matters (grievances, civil remedies, human rights and freedoms, allegations of discrimination, remedies for harassment or other violations of labour standards, occupational injuries, etc.). Catherine holds a master’s degree in labour law and human rights law from the University of Oxford, and was a partner in an international law firm before joining Langlois Lawyers. 

Marie-Hélène Jetté has more than 20 years’ experience in labour and employment law, human rights and freedoms, and administrative law. She is particularly interested in the pharmaceutical and arts industries, and has extensive experience with psychological harassment, a topic on which she has given many presentations. She frequently pleads before civil courts and administrative tribunals, and regularly advises employers on matters involving harassment, discrimination, occupational health and safety, corporate penal law, labour standards and termination of employment, particularly in the context of mergers and acquisitions. She has also participated in many negotiations as spokesperson or special advisor. Before joining Langlois Lawyers, Marie-Hélène was a partner in an international law firm.

Catherine Cayer is involved in all aspects of labour and employment law, particularly in litigious settings. She assists clients and colleagues with a wide variety of matters, including the interpretation and application of collective agreements and employment contracts, the imposition of disciplinary measures, labour standards, human rights, occupational health and safety, and potential remedies before courts, administrative bodies and grievance arbitrators.

While at law school, Catherine interned as a research assistant at the Quebec Superior Court. She also excelled academically, earning several awards for excellence, including ranking first in the first and second years of her degree program.

Catherine Deslauriers is involved in the areas of construction, labour law and occupational health and safety, and in managing files involving medical issues such as disability and absenteeism. She has extensive experience in penal law, and in that connection intervenes in investigations conducted by various public bodies such as the CNESST, the CCQ, autonomous auditing units such as UPAC-CCQ, and by parity committees. She also assists employers in investigations following serious or fatal accidents. She has advised on whether construction projects are subject to the Act respecting labour relations, vocational training and workforce management in the construction industry (Bill R-20). She has also been involved in implementing procedures to ensure that work is performed in compliance with occupational health and safety legislation, and with auditing and improving internal mechanisms to control risks and dangers present in the workplace. Through her past experience working in the CNESST’s occupational health and safety branch and in the legal department of a construction industry employers’ association, Catherine has acquired specialized expertise that has proven to be an invaluable asset in many situations. 

Marjolaine Lessard-Jean provides support to a wide variety of clients ranging from family-owned and operated businesses to major corporations and SMEs in all sectors and industries. In close collaboration with her colleagues she is actively involved in research, strategy development, preparation and hearing of disputes before the courts and various tribunals. In the course of her practice she advises and assists clients with all aspects of labour and employment law and human resources management, including the hiring and dismissal of employees, the interpretation of collective agreements, grievance arbitrations, labour relations, labour standards, occupational health and safety, and employment-related litigation. 

Geneviève Plante assists clients and colleagues in analyzing a broad range of legal matters, including the interpretation and application of collective agreements, the imposition of disciplinary sanctions, and issues involving labour standards, occupational health and safety, termination of employment and human rights and freedoms. She also has experience drafting employment contracts and proceedings presentable before the courts, administrative bodies and grievance arbitrators. While studying law, Geneviève worked as an intern at Quebec’s Administrative labour Tribunal from 2012 to 2014. 

Eve St-Hilaire advises and represents employers in a variety of labour and employment law matters, primarily involving occupational health and safety. She appears on a regular basis on behalf of her clients before administrative tribunals such as the Administrative Labour Tribunal. In 2009 and 2010 Eve was a lecturer at the University of Sherbrooke, where she taught a course on occupational health and safety legislation.
