Langlois’ expertise in Aboriginal Law at the heart of a strategic collaboration agreement

July 14th, 2025

Langlois is proud to have acted on behalf of the Lac-Simon Anishnabe Nation Council (the “Council”) throughout an intensive negotiation process that has led to the conclusion of a strategic collaboration agreement for the Anishnabe communities of Lac-Simon and Kitcisakik, in connection with the construction and operation of a gold mining project in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.

Our team worked alongside the Council from the outset of discussions, leading the negotiations, overseeing its drafting, and securing consensus among all stakeholders. The complexity and scope of this agreement also required the involvement of several legal counsels and the contributions of forensic accounting experts. The culmination of several years of work, this agreement demonstrates our commitment to our clients, our proven ability to deliver on long-term mandates, our expertise in Aboriginal law and the structuring of complex agreements.

This collaboration agreement is part of a development approach focused on strengthening local communities, notably through job creation, professional training, environmental protection, and support for a range of economic projects. It also provides for financial contributions to both communities to support them in implementing local initiatives. This agreement clearly illustrates the importance of laying the foundations for economic reconciliation between the mining industry and First Nations, fostering both the social acceptability of projects and the predictability sought by stakeholders in the business community.

This matter was led with distinction by Caroline Briand and Julie Paré, with valuable contributions from several members of Langlois’ multidisciplinary team.
