An Ace Litigator Joins Langlois

Montréal, September 28, 2016 – With the recruitment of Sean Griffin, Langlois Lawyers has gained a skilful litigator whose practice centres on banking and securities litigation, class actions, and regulatory and internal investigations. His arrival has allowed the firm to expand its services offering and better serve its clientele in those burgeoning practice areas.

Leading-edge practice

It was in 2007, while the global financial crisis was convulsing the Canadian financial markets, that Sean began practicing in a large national law firm, where he was part of a team dedicated to restructuring the asset-backed commercial paper (ABCP) market and specialized in internal and regulatory investigations stemming from the ABCP crisis. Since then he has been advising individuals, financial institutions, securities brokers, insurance companies and other reporting issuers on the prevention and management of the legal and regulatory risks inherent in their industries.

Sean frequently represents his clients in connection with internal investigations and regulatory investigations conducted by various Canadian authorities. He has also developed a practice defending against class actions brought by shareholders and consumers, particularly those involving allegations of false or misleading representations on the secondary market and in connection with the distribution of complex financial products. “Sean’s extensive experience with complex and often pan-Canadian files at all levels of the judicial system significantly enhances our service offering and aligns perfectly with our strategy for expanding our litigation practice”, stated Jean-François Gagnon, managing partner of Langlois Lawyers.

A true business partner

In Sean’s view, a lawyer’s relationship with the client should go beyond that of a legal advisor. “I strive to be a true business partner, a trusted advisor who counsels and supports clients in executing their overall business strategy”, emphasized Sean. He added that Langlois Lawyers’ organizational agility, business acumen, entrepreneurial spirit and familiarity with the day-to-day reality of its clients were what prompted him to join the firm. Sean’s practice has also led him to be a sought-after speaker and instructor on various subjects related to his area of expertise, including the conduct of internal and regulatory investigations, protecting solicitor-client privilege, managing legal and regulatory risks, and governance.
